Therapies

I complete a comprehensive assessment of mental and physical aspects of sleep and a detailed history of the complaint which typically involves questionnaire measures and sleep diaries. Evidence-based psychological therapies inform sleep interventions. I flexibly use CBT-I, ACT and CFT to meet individual client needs. The therapeutic relationship is key to change processes and we may explore interpersonal patterns together that often play a part in our relationship to sleep.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

CBT-I involves the completion of sleep diaries to review sleep patterns and to develop a schedule to improve the quality and total sleep time.

Acceptance and
Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a ‘third wave’ psychotherapy which has evolved and transformed from traditional CBT and has a very sound evidence base for use across a wide range of psychological difficulties.

Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT)

Compassion Focussed Therapy is a comparatively new therapy which has been developed from developmental, evolutionary and social psychology with roots in neuroscience.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness underpins third wave psychotherapy approaches and mindfulness-based therapy for insomnia holds great potential for alleviation of sleep distress in certain groups.
